Sewer Line Cleanout

Professional sewer line cleanout for your home

The sewer line carries wastewater away from every sink, shower, toilet and appliance in the house. When it becomes blocked, the whole plumbing system feels it. Slow drains, unpleasant odors and backups are common signs that the line needs attention.

Trident Plumbing & Drain uses diagnostic equipment and cleaning techniques suited to the line to remove grease, sludge, tree roots, mineral buildup and other debris. If more work is needed, hydro jetting, drain cleaning and repair or other sewer services can be discussed. Contact our North Phoenix office to arrange a visit.

Watch for patterns

Sewer blockages usually develop gradually and give warning before a complete backup. Watch for several drains slowing at once, toilets that clog or overflow often, gurgling from drains and frequent clogs throughout the house.

Sewage odors inside or outside, water backing up into tubs or showers and standing water near an outdoor cleanout are also signs. Unusually green patches of grass above the sewer line can point to a leak. Several of these together are a good reason to schedule a cleanout before a backup.

Access point

What the cleanout is and why access matters

A cleanout is a capped fitting that gives the plumber direct access to the sewer line without working through a sink or toilet. Clearing the main line from that point lets the equipment reach the blockage more directly.

Knowing where the cleanout is helps the visit start smoothly. If you are not sure, or the cap is buried or damaged, tell the office when you schedule. Avoid opening a cleanout yourself during a backup, since a blocked line can release wastewater when the cap comes off.

Clearing the line

Choosing how to clear the blockage

Grease, sludge, roots and mineral buildup each respond differently. Depending on the source and severity, the plumber may recommend drain cleaning and repair or hydro jetting to restore flow through the main line.

Roots that have entered the line usually need to be cut before the pipe can be flushed clean. The recommendation should follow the cause of the blockage, so ask what was found and why a method was chosen.

Look inside

When a camera inspection comes next

If blockages return or the cause is unclear, a camera inspection can show roots, cracks, buildup or damaged sections inside the line. Seeing the pipe helps separate a cleaning problem from one that needs repair.

Ignoring repeat sewer problems raises the chance of backups and property damage. Keep the findings from each visit so later decisions about cleaning, repair or replacement rest on the line's actual condition.

Owner's line

Your sewer line runs all the way to the main

When several drains back up at once, the blockage is often in the line that carries everything from the house to the City sewer. Responsibility for that line sits with the property owner. The City of Phoenix says owners must clean and maintain it from the house to its connection with the City sewer main in the street or alley, and City Code Section 28-5 limits City repairs to broken service lines in the public right of way.

Across ZIP codes 85044, 85045 and 85048, about 70% of homes are detached single-family houses, so most owners have their own line to look after. Median build years of 1989 to 1999 mean many of those lines have been in the ground for 25 years or more. Keep a record of each cleanout, including what was found and where, so a later visit can tell whether the same section keeps causing trouble.

Cleanout pricing

What decides the cost of a sewer line cleanout

A main line clearing is priced by access, distance and what is blocking the pipe.

If the camera shows the line needs repair or replacement, ask about GreenSky® financing.

  • Whether the cleanout is accessible or has to be uncovered.
  • How far along the line the blockage sits.
  • Roots, grease, scale or a collapsed section.
  • A camera inspection to confirm the cause.
  • Repair work if the line is cracked or separated.

They came out quickly, did camera work, and took the time to thoroughly track down the issue instead of rushing. Turns out we had roots breaking a pipe under our tub.

Questions about
sewer line cleanout in Ahwatukee.

Questions about sewer line cleanout in Ahwatukee? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
Why are several drains slow at the same time?

When multiple fixtures slow together, the restriction is often in the shared main line rather than one drain. A sewer line cleanout addresses that part of the system.

Do roots in the line mean it has to be replaced?

Not necessarily. Roots can often be cut and the line cleaned. A camera inspection shows whether the pipe is also cracked or damaged and needs repair.

Should I keep using the plumbing during a sewer backup?

No. Stop using sinks, toilets, showers and appliances that drain into the line, and request service. Running more water can add to the backup.

Can a cleanout be scheduled before there is a backup?

Yes. If you have noticed warning signs, a scheduled cleanout can address buildup before it causes a backup or water damage.

Will the City fix a sewer backup that starts in my yard?

Not if the blockage is in your own service line. The City of Phoenix places the cleaning and upkeep of that line, from the house to the main, on the property owner. Its repairs are limited to broken service lines in the public right of way.

How long has my sewer line been in service?

If it is original, about as long as the house. Census estimates put the median home at 1989 in ZIP code 85044, 1995 in 85048 and 1999 in 85045. Repair records or a camera inspection show whether any sections have been replaced.
