Smart choices

Sizing the heater to your household

Choosing a water heater is about more than capacity. Household size, how much hot water is used at the same time and the space available all matter. Considering them up front helps you avoid overspending on a system that is larger than needed or struggling with one that cannot keep up with demand.

Think about the busiest hour of a typical day, such as several showers back to back with a dishwasher running. That peak, rather than the daily total, is what a tank’s capacity or a tankless unit’s output needs to handle. Trident’s technicians can talk through how the models you are considering would meet it.

Every home, every system

Tank, tankless, hybrid and Marathon options

Trident installs and services tank and tankless models powered by gas or electricity. A storage tank holds heated water for the household, and a tankless unit heats water only as it flows through. Hybrid heat pump heaters and Marathon electric tank heaters are additional options when they fit the property.

Fuel source, venting and the location of the existing heater can affect which option is practical and what the installation involves. Ask what changes, if any, would be needed to switch to a different type of system.

Stay ahead

Proactive maintenance after installation

Water heaters can fail with little warning, leaving you with unexpected expenses and no hot water. Regular water heater maintenance can address wear, sediment buildup and small issues before they grow, and it helps the unit operate efficiently.

Tank and tankless systems have different maintenance needs, and the manufacturer’s instructions set the baseline. Ask for a schedule suited to the unit, and keep a record of each service so a later technician can see what has been done.

Before the work

Questions to settle before installation

Ask what the installation includes, such as connections, venting, safety components and removal of the old unit, and whether gas, electrical or venting changes are needed for the new system. Clear answers make it easier to compare options.

If the existing heater may still be repairable, ask whether repair is practical before committing to replacement. When replacement is the right step, financing is one option to raise during the consultation.

Permits and pressure

A permit, a pressure valve and Town water chemistry

The Town's fee schedule lists a permit for a like-for-like water heater change-out, and all permit requests, plan reviews and inspection requests go through its online permitting portal. For work that requires a permit, the schedule charges two times the permit and plan review fees if the work has already begun. Applications filed since January 1, 2026 follow the 2024 codes, including the 2024 International Plumbing Code. Ask the Town about the permit before the swap is scheduled.

Pressure matters too. Town water service requires a pressure reducing valve near the meter, and the Town says a failing one can send water out of a heater's relief valve. The Town's 2025 water report lists calcium at 71 parts per million and a Langelier Index of 0.469, which it describes as an estimate of whether water tends to dissolve or deposit calcium. The report does not say what that value means for your pipes. In general, a positive index points to water that tends to leave scale, so plan on flushing a tank or descaling a tankless unit.

Pricing a heater

What moves the price of water heater work

A water heater quote follows the unit you choose and the work needed around it. These factors change it most.

GreenSky® financing can spread the cost of a replacement. The preventative maintenance membership adds a yearly water heater flush, a whole-home inspection and 10% off plumbing services.

  • Repairing a part or replacing the whole unit.
  • Tank, tankless or hybrid heat pump, and gas or electric.
  • Venting, gas line or electrical changes for a different type of heater.
  • Any Town permit and inspection for the change-out.
  • Work on the pressure reducing valve or an expansion tank, if either needs it.

Required

The Town lists water leaving a water heater's relief valve as one sign of a failing pressure valve, so check the valve before blaming the heater.

Calcium in Town water, sampled in 2025
71 ppm

Calcium is a mineral that settles as scale in tanks and on tankless heat exchangers. The Town's report says calcium is used to judge hardness and scaling potential.

Our 12 year old water heater was leaking. I called and spoke with Shelby who was able to dispatch a technician immediately, same day… Tyler arrived on time, worked efficiently and cleaned up after himself.

water heater installation in Cave Creek.

Questions about water heater installation in Cave Creek? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
What size water heater does my household need?

It depends on peak hot-water demand, household size and the available space. A technician can review these with you before recommending a unit.

Is a tankless water heater a good fit for every home?

Not always. Fuel source, venting, the existing location and the household’s hot-water use affect whether tankless is practical.

How often should a water heater be maintained?

Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your model. Tank and tankless units have different needs, and a technician can suggest a schedule.

Do you install hybrid water heaters in Cave Creek?

Yes. Trident installs hybrid heat pump water heaters as well as tank, tankless and Marathon models, depending on what fits the property.

Do I need a Town permit to swap my heater for the same type?

The Town's fee schedule lists a permit for a like-for-like water heater change-out. Check with the Town's Building Safety office before work starts. If work that requires a permit begins before the permit, the schedule charges two times the permit and plan review fees.

Why is water coming out of my heater's relief valve?

It can be the heater, or it can be pressure. The Town lists water discharging from a water heater's relief valve as a symptom of a failing pressure reducing valve, the valve near your meter. Both should be checked before a repair is chosen.
