Sewer line repair and replacement in Scottsdale

The sewer line carries wastewater away from every toilet, shower and sink on the property, so a problem there tends to show up in more than one place. Trident Plumbing & Drain inspects sewer lines at Scottsdale homes and businesses and explains whether the cause is buildup, roots or damaged pipe.

If only one sink or shower is slow, the drain cleaning guide is the better starting point. For the main line, contact our North Phoenix office with the fixtures affected, how often backups happen and any earlier sewer cleaning or inspection results.

Whole-property symptoms

Signs the problem sits in the main line

Several drains slowing at once, a toilet that gurgles when another fixture drains, wastewater coming up in a tub or shower drain and sewer odors indoors all suggest a shared line rather than one fixture. Unexplained soggy ground along the line's route also merits a look, though the source needs confirming.

While wastewater is coming back up, leave the affected fixtures unused and keep clear of the water. Tell the office which drains are involved and whether the backup is happening now. You do not need to know where the line has failed to request service.

Look inside the pipe

Debris and buildup restrict flow, while cracked, shifted or broken pipe is a defect that cleaning cannot correct. Roots can grow in through compromised areas of the pipe. A camera inspection lets the technician see which of these is present and where along the line it sits.

Sewer cleaning, including hydro jetting for a line in suitable condition, can restore flow, but the condition of the pipe matters before high-pressure cleaning is chosen. If backups returned after earlier cleaning, share when; the pattern is part of the evidence.

Section or whole line

A damaged section may be repairable on its own. More extensive deterioration along the line can make replacement worth considering. How far the damage runs, where it sits, how sound the rest of the pipe is and how the line can be reached all feed into that choice.

Ask what the proposed work addresses, which parts of the existing line will remain and what access is needed to reach it. Excavation, timing and surface restoration depend on the property and findings, so discuss them for your site.

Keep the line working

Care for the line after the repair

Ongoing sewer care can mean periodic inspection and cleaning where it is warranted, set by how the line is used and what the inspection showed. It does not make damaged pipe sound, so keep the repair findings with your property records for comparison if symptoms return.

What goes down the drains matters too. The City of Scottsdale's maintenance and prevention guidance explains that cooking fats, oils and grease can harden in household pipes and the public sewer, and recommends putting them in the trash instead.

Main or lateral

When the City crew finds the problem is yours

Scottsdale Water's first step with a backup is working out where it starts, and it can send a crew to help. If the blockage is in the main line, the City makes the repair and handles any property damage claims through its Risk Management office. If it is in the sewer lateral, the owner is responsible, and the City counts the tap, the sleeve that connects the house line to the main, as part of the lateral.

That puts the whole line, from the house to the connection at the main, on the owner's side. The City lists sewer line repair as Minimum Plumbing Permit work, with no plan review but a permit and inspection. It also partners with Service Line Warranties of America on voluntary coverage for water and sewer service lines, and encourages residents to check their homeowner's policy before adding a warranty. Keep the camera findings with your records.

Sewer budgeting

Cost factors for a sewer section or a full line

Sewer repair pricing follows the damage and what sits above it. Most of the gap between two quotes comes from these factors.

A full line replacement can be financed through the GreenSky® Credit Program.

  • The length of pipe that has failed and its depth below grade.
  • What sits above it: lawn, desert landscaping, a driveway or a slab.
  • Repairing one section compared with replacing the line out to the tap.
  • Camera footage of the line before digging and after the repair.
  • The City's Minimum Plumbing Permit and inspection.

Sewer ownership

Where the City's sewer stops and yours begins

The City's water utility draws a clear line between its sewer main and your lateral. Here is what falls on your side.

The owner's share of the sewer connection
Lateral + tap

The City defines the lateral to include the tap, the sleeve that joins the house line to the main. A problem anywhere along that stretch is the owner's to repair.

They came out quickly, did camera work, and took the time to thoroughly track down the issue instead of rushing. Turns out we had roots breaking a pipe under our tub.

Questions about
sewer line repair in Scottsdale.

Questions about sewer line repair in Scottsdale? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
What do roots in the sewer line tell you?

Roots get in where the pipe is already compromised, so finding them is a reason to check that section's condition. Cleaning, a section repair or replacement then depends on the damage found.

Can part of a sewer line be repaired without replacing all of it?

It can be, when the damage is confined to a section. Replacement becomes worth discussing when deterioration extends along the line, and the inspection shows which applies.

What should a sewer repair proposal explain?

What the work addresses, which sections of the existing pipe remain, the access needed and how the disturbed area will be left. Ask about anything not covered before approving the work.

Is financing available for sewer line replacement?

Trident offers financing options for larger plumbing projects. Ask about them once the scope of the replacement is clear.

Is the sewer tap at the main my responsibility?

Yes. The City's water utility includes the tap, the sleeve that connects the house service line to the sewer main, in the sewer lateral, which the property owner maintains and repairs.

Does a sewer line repair need a permit in Scottsdale?

Yes. The City lists sewer line repair as a Minimum Plumbing Permit project, which skips plan review, though its building permit examples also include repair of sewer. Either way, plan on a permit and inspection.
