Softening, not general filtration

Water softener installation for hard water

A water softener from Trident Plumbing & Drain is installed to reduce the calcium and magnesium behind hard water, scale and soap residue. A softener has one main job, and planning starts by confirming that hardness is the problem you want solved.

Our North Phoenix office serves Scottsdale. For taste, odor or a specific substance, the Scottsdale water filtration page compares carbon filtration, reverse osmosis and softening side by side. The sections below stay with softening: local hardness information, pairing with other treatment and ongoing salt and service.

Confirm the fit

Make sure hardness is the concern

Scale on fixtures, residue in tubs and sinks and detergent that underperforms are the problems a softener is designed to address. If those are what you see, softening is worth planning. If taste or a particular substance worries you more, start with filtration.

A softener is not chosen to remove a particular contaminant from drinking water; that is the role of a filter matched to the substance. Knowing which concern comes first keeps the installation focused and avoids choosing equipment for the wrong job.

Local information

Look up hardness for your part of the city

If Scottsdale Water serves your home, its drinking water page explains where hardness comes from and lists approximate hardness levels for different areas of the city. That gives the softener discussion a local reference point.

Area figures are approximate, so treat them as background rather than a reading for your address. A measurement at the home, together with what you see on fixtures, gives the recommendation a firmer footing.

Combined treatment

Pair a softener with drinking-water treatment

Softening and reverse osmosis can work together. A softener addresses hardness for the whole home, while a reverse osmosis unit handles only the water from the drinking-water fixture it is connected to.

If treatment equipment is already installed, describe it and what it was chosen to do. The softener, any existing system and the plumbing around them should be planned together, so each piece of equipment keeps its intended role.

Ongoing care

Plan salt and service from the start

A salt-based softener needs the salt and service its model specifies. Ask how to monitor the salt level and the system's performance, and what maintenance is due, so those tasks are understood from installation onward.

If you prefer not to handle the salt yourself, Trident's Salt Service membership includes visits that add salt to your system. Ask whether the plan suits the unit you choose, and report any return of scale or residue.

Two sets of numbers

Which hardness figure to set a softener by

Scottsdale Water publishes hardness by area, in grains per gallon and in milligrams per liter. Its 2026 Water Quality Report lists approximate hardness of 13 to 15 grains per gallon south of Indian School Road, 13 to 17 from Indian School Road to Chaparral Road and 13 to 17 north of Chaparral Road. The City does not treat for hardness itself, saying the extra treatment would not be cost effective when most residential water is used outdoors.

The hardness table on the City's drinking water page lists higher ranges: 22 to 25 grains south of Indian School Road, 20 to 22 from there to Chaparral Road and 16 to 18 north of Chaparral Road. Because the published figures differ and the source mix shifts with season and demand, a measurement at your tap is the firmer guide; set the softener for the harder end of what your home receives. If your water bill comes from EPCOR rather than the City, neither table applies; use EPCOR's report.

Cost factors for a new softener

The unit's size and the plumbing work to tie it in account for most of a softener quote.

Trident currently offers 20% off a new water softener or filtration system. One per household. Offers can't be combined; some restrictions apply. With our salt service membership, salt is added every 6 to 8 weeks for a year.

  • System size, set by how much water the household uses and how hard it is.
  • A ready-made loop at the install spot, or new piping to create one.
  • A drain for the regeneration water and a nearby power outlet.
  • The City's Minimum Plumbing Permit for the softener plumbing.
  • Adding a reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink in the same visit.

Questions about
water softener installation in Scottsdale.

Questions about water softener installation in Scottsdale? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
Should I look at filtration or softening first?

Start with the concern. Scale and soap residue point to softening. Taste, odor or a specific substance call for the filtration options, which can be installed alongside a softener if both apply.

Can I add a softener if the home already has reverse osmosis?

Yes. A softener addresses whole-home hardness and a reverse osmosis system treats water at its connected fixture. Share details of the existing system so both are considered together.

Do I have to add the softener salt myself?

You can, following the model instructions. Trident also offers a Salt Service membership with visits that add salt to the system. Ask whether it fits the unit installed in your home.

Does hardness vary across the city?

The city's drinking water page lists different approximate hardness levels for different areas. Use it as background and confirm with a measurement at the home.

I took the City's softener removal rebate. Can I install a new softener?

Check your rebate terms first. Scottsdale Water's 2024–25 removal rebate paid in two phases and asked for photos about a year after removal to confirm no new salt-using devices had been installed. That application also counted a qualifying in-line non-salt system as an acceptable replacement. Ask the City's Water Conservation Office before you buy.

Can a softener lower my water pressure?

It can. The City's water utility lists a water softening device among the causes of low pressure. Check the pressure at the hose bib at the front of the house; if it is good there, bypass the softener and check again. If pressure returns, the softener is the likely cause.
