Choosing a new heater

Water heater installation

The right heater depends on the property's hot-water demand, the space available and your budget. Conventional storage tanks keep a supply of heated water ready, while tankless units heat water as it flows through and have no stored supply to run out of.

Sizing matters as much as type. An undersized unit leaves you short of hot water, while an oversized one may cost more to buy and run than necessary. The installation should match the demand and be connected correctly so the heater works efficiently.

When something changes

Signs your water heater needs repair

No hot water, not enough hot water, water that is too hot or not hot enough, strange noises and leaking water are the common reasons to call for water heater repair. Note when the change started and whether it affects every hot-water fixture or just one.

An inspection identifies which component or connection is involved before the repair is defined. Several faults can look alike from the tap, so the technician should explain what was found and what the repair will address.

Routine care

What a maintenance visit covers

Regular maintenance helps keep a water heater working properly. A visit can include inspecting the unit for wear, checking the pressure relief valve, anode rod and thermostat, checking the electrical or gas connections and flushing the tank to remove sediment.

If the visit turns up a problem, you will hear what needs repair. It is also a chance to learn whether the heater is nearing the end of its service life, so a replacement can be planned rather than arriving as a surprise.

Repair or replace

When replacement is worth discussing

A heater that needs repeated repairs, leaks from the tank itself or no longer keeps up with demand may be a candidate for replacement. Age alone does not decide it; the condition of the unit and the likelihood of further repairs matter too.

When replacement is on the table, ask which findings point that way and what installing the new unit would involve. It is also the natural point to compare another tank with a tankless or hybrid model.

Minerals in the tank

What Glendale's hardness does inside a heater

Glendale's 2025 water quality report lists hardness from 5.4 to 18.5 grains per gallon, with an average of 13.8, and says plainly that hard water can lead to scaling in water heaters. The minerals are calcium and magnesium, dissolved from soils as river water travels to the City's treatment plants. When the water is heated, some of them drop out and collect as sediment at the bottom of a tank or as scale on a tankless heat exchanger.

Signs of buildup include a tank that crackles as it heats, hot water that runs out sooner or a tankless unit that flags a fault. Because the City's samples span such a wide range, the water at your tap may sit well above or below the average, so let the heater's condition guide how often it is flushed or descaled. A softener ahead of the heater cuts the scale that reaches it, and our preventative maintenance membership includes one water heater flush a year.

Budget factors

Pricing a heater repair or replacement

A fair quote follows an inspection, because the same symptom can come from a worn part or a failing tank. These are the details that move the price either way.

Because a licensed contractor's residential replacement needs no City permit, the timing mostly depends on the heater and the work around it. A new heater can be financed with GreenSky®, and our preventative maintenance membership takes 10% off plumbing services.

  • Repair or replacement, and which part has failed if the heater is worth repairing.
  • Heater type and fuel: tank, tankless or hybrid, gas or electric.
  • Gas line changes for a new fuel or location, which need a City permit.
  • How much sediment or scale has to be cleared first.
  • Access to the heater in a garage, closet or attic.

What the City's water and rules mean for your heater

Hardness, permits and gas piping rules all shape how a heater in Glendale is installed and looked after.

The City's report says hard water can lead to scaling in water heaters. In a tank it settles as sediment; in a tankless unit it coats the heat exchanger.

Our 12 year old water heater was leaking. I called and spoke with Shelby who was able to dispatch a technician immediately, same day… Tyler arrived on time, worked efficiently and cleaned up after himself.

Questions about
water heater services in Glendale.

Questions about water heater services in Glendale? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
Do you install both gas and electric water heaters?

Yes. Trident installs gas and electric water heaters, including conventional tanks, tankless, hybrid and Marathon models.

Is a tankless water heater right for my home?

It depends on your hot-water demand, the available space and the existing gas or electrical supply. Ask for a side-by-side look at tankless and conventional tank options for your property.

What happens during water heater maintenance?

The visit can include inspecting the unit, checking the pressure relief valve, anode rod, thermostat and connections, and flushing sediment from the tank.

Can you work on a water heater at a business?

Yes. Trident serves residential and commercial customers. Describe the heater, how the property uses hot water and any access arrangements.

Does a water heater swap in Glendale need a City permit?

Not if a licensed contractor installs it at a home. The City's permit Q&A lists residential water heater replacement among the jobs that need no permit in that case. Gas pipe work that comes with a new heater is different: installing, replacing or extending a gas pipe requires a permit.

How often should a water heater be flushed here?

There is no single schedule. The City's 2025 samples averaged 13.8 grains of hardness per gallon and reached 18.5, and with water that hard, sediment builds over time. Once a year is a sensible starting point, which is what our preventative maintenance membership includes, and what each flush removes shows whether to adjust.
