Sewer line inspection, repair and replacement

A sewer line problem can show up at every fixture that drains into it: toilets, showers, tubs and sinks. Trident Plumbing & Drain provides sewer line inspection, repair and replacement for homes and businesses, starting with what is actually wrong with the line.

Our North Phoenix office arranges sewer visits. If only one sink is slow, start with drain cleaning and repair instead; this page is about the shared line that several fixtures depend on and the repairs it may need.

Whole-building signs

When several drains act up together

Slow drainage at more than one fixture, gurgling sounds, sewer odors and wastewater coming up in a tub or shower point beyond a single drain. Unexplained soggy ground where the line runs outside can be another reason to investigate, although the source still needs confirming.

During a backup, stop running water into the affected fixtures and keep away from the wastewater. Tell us which drains are involved and whether the symptoms happen together. That pattern helps direct the inspection without you having to locate the failed section.

Look inside the line

Debris and buildup restrict flow, while cracked, shifted or otherwise damaged pipe needs repair. Roots can enter through compromised joints or cracks and form another obstruction. A camera inspection can show the condition of the line before a method is chosen.

Clearing a blockage does not correct a damaged section. If backups return soon after cleaning, that pattern belongs in the investigation. Hydro jetting may suit a sound line with heavy buildup, but the pipe's condition comes first.

Repair or replace

A damaged section may be repairable on its own. More extensive deterioration can make replacing the line worth considering. How far the damage extends, where it sits, the state of the rest of the pipe and how the line can be reached all shape the recommendation.

Ask what the proposed work fixes, which parts of the existing line will stay and what access the work requires. A general promise about digging or completion time cannot replace an assessment of your property.

Whose line is it?

The private sewer line and the public main

For properties on the City of Phoenix sewer system, the city's Water Services FAQ explains that the city is responsible for infrastructure in public rights-of-way and utility easements. The line from that connection back to the house or business belongs to the property owner, and the city points owners to a plumber for inspections.

That private portion is the part Trident inspects, cleans, repairs and replaces. If sewage is overflowing from a manhole or the problem appears to be in the public main, contact the city. Problems in the line serving your building are the ones to bring to us.

City Code 28-5

Where City repairs stop and the inspection starts

The City of Phoenix's sewer guidance cites City Code Section 28-5: the City will only repair broken service lines within the public right of way. Owners clean and maintain the line from the house to the City main in the street or alley. Where a property line has changed, a City manhole can sit in a former alley or a backyard easement, and crews access it only with the owner's permission, except in an extreme emergency.

When a damaged section of your line is replaced, the City's 2024 building code treats it as new work. It requires a rough-in or underground inspection of sewer and drain piping before the pipe is buried, so the trench stays open until the inspection is done. Plan for that step in the schedule, and ask how the yard, driveway or landscaping will be restored once the line passes. A camera check of the finished line is worth asking for too.

What goes into a sewer repair estimate

Depth, distance and what sits on top of the line drive a sewer estimate.

Ask about GreenSky® financing if the line has to be replaced.

  • Where the damage is: under the slab, the yard or a driveway.
  • The depth of the line and the length that needs replacing.
  • The City permit and the underground inspection before backfill.
  • Root intrusion that has to be cleared first.
  • Concrete, landscaping or flooring to restore afterward.

They came out quickly, did camera work, and took the time to thoroughly track down the issue instead of rushing. Turns out we had roots breaking a pipe under our tub.

Ask our team
Who is responsible for the sewer line between my building and the street?

For properties on the city sewer system, the city handles the public system in rights-of-way and easements, and the owner is responsible for the line from that connection back to the building.

Does a sewer backup mean the line is broken?

Not necessarily. Buildup or an obstruction can cause a backup in a sound pipe. An inspection shows whether cleaning is enough or whether damaged pipe needs repair.

Why do several drains gurgle at once?

Gurgling at more than one fixture can be a sign that the shared line is restricted or damaged. It is a reason to have the line inspected rather than a diagnosis on its own.

Do you replace sewer lines as well as repair them?

Yes. Trident provides sewer line repair and replacement. The inspection findings determine whether a section repair or a larger replacement is appropriate.

Who do I call if sewage is overflowing from a manhole?

Call the City. Its 24/7 Emergency Hotline, 602-261-8000, takes water and sewer emergencies such as an overflow. A backup inside your building that comes from your own line is one to bring to us.

Does a sewer line replacement need an inspection in Phoenix?

Yes. The City's 2024 building code requires a rough-in or underground inspection of sewer, drainage and vent piping before it is buried or concealed.
