Decide with the right information

Choosing a water softener for your home

Chalky scale on a showerhead, residue left by soap and buildup around faucets often prompt the first question about softening. Trident Plumbing & Drain installs water softeners and starts with the concerns you have noticed instead of a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Our North Phoenix office arranges service for Gilbert homes. The sections below walk through the signs of hard water, the information worth checking, what softening can and cannot address and what the installation plan should include.

Read the clues

What hard water tends to leave behind

Hard water carries dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. They can build up as scale on fixtures, inside plumbing and in water heaters, and they can make soap and detergent less effective, which shows up as residue in sinks, tubs and laundry.

These signs suggest hardness but do not measure it. Note where buildup appears, whether it has become more noticeable and which water-using appliances seem affected. A short record like that makes the softener conversation specific to your home.

Check before choosing

Look at your water information first

Hardness differs from one supply to another, so a broad regional figure is a weak basis for choosing equipment. Figures from your water provider or a hardness test taken at the home give the recommendation a firmer starting point.

Bring any test results, utility information or notes from a previous softener to the discussion. If you have nothing on paper, describe what you see. Trident can talk through what would be useful to check before a system is selected.

Set expectations

What softening does and does not address

A softener reduces hardness minerals. The practical benefits follow from that: less room for scale to form and soap and detergent that work more effectively. Other water-quality concerns need their own answer, and softening does not promise a longer appliance life or a set energy saving.

If the main concern is drinking-water taste, odor or a specific substance, discuss it separately. Carbon filtration and reverse osmosis serve different purposes and can be planned alongside a softener when both concerns are present.

Plan the setup

What the installation plan should include

Tell us how many people use water in the home, whether any treatment equipment is already installed and where hardness is most noticeable. Those details and the existing plumbing setup shape the proposed equipment and the installation work.

Before choosing a unit, ask about its salt and maintenance requirements. Each model has its own salt and service needs, so upkeep should be part of the plan from the first day rather than an afterthought.

Dial in the setting

Setting a softener for Town of Gilbert water

Gilbert publishes two sets of hardness numbers. Its water FAQ says the average runs 8 to 10 grains per gallon and suggests setting a softener between 10 and 12 grains to allow for seasonal variation. Its 2025 water quality report, based on that year's testing, lists an average of 10.79 grains with readings from 6.61 to 17.54. If a test result comes back in milligrams per liter, divide by 17.1, the Town's own conversion, to get grains.

Use the Town's 10 to 12 grain guidance as a starting setting, and recheck it if scale keeps returning. The softener itself needs no permit, because the Town's code amendments exempt water softeners, but it still needs a proper connection to the supply line and a drain. Softening targets calcium and magnesium. The same report lists total dissolved solids averaging 801 mg/L and arsenic averaging 6.3 parts per billion, with results from not detected to 12; the report says compliance with the federal limit of 10 is based on a running average, not the highest single result. Those are separate questions; ask about reverse osmosis at a drinking water tap if they matter to you.

Softener budget

What changes a softener installation price

A softener price depends on the system's capacity and what the plumbing at your install spot already has. These are the main variables.

The current special offer is 20% off a new water softener or filtration system. One per household. Offers can't be combined; some restrictions apply. If you would rather not haul salt, the salt service membership adds softener salt every 6 to 8 weeks.

  • Grain capacity matched to your household's use and the Town's hardness figures.
  • An existing softener loop, or new piping to create one.
  • Drain access for regeneration and any power needed at the spot.
  • Adding reverse osmosis for drinking water at the same time.
  • Removing an old or failed softener.

Hardness by the numbers

Questions about
water softener installation in Gilbert.

Questions about water softener installation in Gilbert? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
Do I need a hardness test before asking about a softener?

No. Describe the scale, residue or appliance concerns you have noticed. Water provider information or a measurement at the home helps the recommendation, and Trident can discuss what is worth checking.

Is a whole-home system necessary if buildup shows up in one bathroom?

Not necessarily. Whole-home softening makes the most sense to discuss when hardness shows up in several rooms. Describe each location so the recommendation reflects how hardness affects the whole house.

Will a softener protect my water heater?

Softening reduces the minerals that can contribute to scale in water heaters and other water-using equipment. It does not promise a longer heater life, so treat it as one part of caring for the equipment alongside maintenance.

Can Trident help me compare softener options?

Yes. The discussion covers your hardness information, household water use, any existing treatment and the salt and maintenance needs of each unit, so the system is chosen for your home rather than by default.

What grain setting does the Town of Gilbert recommend?

The Town's water FAQ suggests 10 to 12 grains per gallon to allow for seasonal changes, based on an average of 8 to 10. Its 2025 report lists readings up to 17.54 grains, so if scale persists at that setting, have the water at your tap tested.

Do I need a permit to install a water softener in Gilbert?

No. The Town's amendments to the residential code list water softeners as work exempt from a permit. The system still has to tie into your supply line and a drain correctly, so plan the location with your plumber.
