Compare the system types

Which water heater should replace yours?

The heaters Trident Plumbing & Drain installs range from conventional tanks to tankless units, hybrid heat pump models and Marathon electric tanks. Each type heats water differently and places different demands on the installation space and the utilities already in the home.

Our North Phoenix office serves Gilbert. If the current heater has a fault you have not had assessed, the Gilbert water heater repair page covers that diagnosis. The sections here assume a replacement and focus on which type of system fits.

Narrow the field

Start with fuel supply and installation space

The fuel or electrical supply available and the space where the heater will sit rule some options in and others out before features enter the discussion. Note the current fuel type and describe the location, including how easy it is to reach.

Hot water demand is the third factor. Explain which showers and appliances run together and whether the current heater has kept up. Trident uses those details to shortlist the systems that suit the home.

On-demand heating

When a tankless heater is on the list

A tankless heater warms water as it is needed instead of keeping a tank of water hot. Removing the storage tank changes how the space is used and how hot water is supplied, so a conversion should be planned around the home rather than chosen on the idea alone.

Ask what the proposed unit requires from the existing utilities and location, and how it would handle the busiest part of your day. Switching from a tank can involve more work than a direct replacement, and that belongs in the comparison.

Electric options

A hybrid heater pairs a heat pump with a storage tank and is worth considering where the space and utilities suit it. The proposed location matters as much as the model, so the installation conditions are reviewed before a hybrid is recommended.

A Marathon is an electric storage tank option. It is compared with a conventional tank on capacity, physical fit and installation needs rather than chosen by product name. Ask Trident to set the electric options side by side for your household.

Keep or change

When the same type is the sensible choice

Replacing a heater with the same type is a reasonable choice, but it should be a decision rather than a default. If the current heater has met the household's needs and the fuel and space suit it, staying with that type keeps the job focused on the new unit.

If hot water has run short or household use has changed, a different capacity or type may deserve a look. Ask how each option compares for demand and installation work so the decision rests on the home rather than habit.

The swap exemption

When a Gilbert heater swap skips the permit

Gilbert's amendments to the residential code include an exemption that covers many replacements. When an Arizona licensed contractor installs it, a replacement gas water heater with an equal or lower BTU rating, or an electric one with an equal or lower amperage and voltage rating, is exempt from a permit, as long as it is listed and labeled by a recognized third-party testing agency. Tankless systems are specifically excluded. Trident is licensed under ROC 331536.

That makes the choice of heater part of the planning. Moving to tankless or choosing a unit with a higher gas or electrical rating takes the job outside the exemption, so check the permit requirement with the Town's Development Services before installation. Placement matters too: the Town's code requires a pan under a tank heater installed in an attic or furred space where a leak would cause damage. We will tell you which path your project takes before the old unit comes out.

Installation budget

Factors behind a heater installation quote

Installation quotes follow the equipment you choose and the changes the house needs to support it. These factors move the total most.

You can spread the cost of a new heater with GreenSky® financing. Our team lays out each option, and what it includes, before any work starts.

  • The type of heater and its capacity: tank, tankless, hybrid heat pump or electric tank.
  • Whether the new unit fits the Town's no-permit replacement path.
  • Gas line, venting or electrical upgrades a different unit needs.
  • A pan and drain line for an attic or furred-space location.
  • Hauling away the old heater.

Permits and placement

Permit status of a like-for-like heater swap
Exempt

A replacement installed by an Arizona licensed contractor needs no permit when it is listed and labeled and its gas or electrical rating is equal to or lower than the old unit's.

Tankless units in the heater permit exemption
Excluded

The exemption leaves out tankless systems, so a tankless installation, or a unit with a higher rating, falls outside the no-permit path.

Our 12 year old water heater was leaking. I called and spoke with Shelby who was able to dispatch a technician immediately, same day… Tyler arrived on time, worked efficiently and cleaned up after himself.

Questions about
water heater installation in Gilbert.

Questions about water heater installation in Gilbert? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
Can a tank water heater be replaced with a tankless unit?

It can be considered. The available utilities, the installation location and hot water demand decide whether it suits the home, and the conversion can involve more work than replacing a tank.

Does a hybrid heater suit every location?

Not automatically. A hybrid needs suitable space and utilities. Trident reviews the proposed location against the model's requirements before recommending it.

Where does a Marathon fit among the options?

A Marathon is an electric storage tank heater, so it is usually weighed against a conventional electric tank and the other electric options for capacity, fit and installation needs.

Should I simply replace my heater with the same kind?

That is one option. If the current heater has kept up and the fuel and space suit it, staying with the same type can make sense. Changing type can involve more work, which belongs in the comparison.

Does a tankless water heater need a permit in Gilbert?

The Town's permit exemption for replacement water heaters specifically excludes tankless systems. Check the permit requirement with the Town's Development Services before a tankless installation, or ask us to confirm it for your project.

Does a water heater in the attic need a drain pan?

Yes, where a leak would cause damage. The Town's amended residential code requires a tank-type heater or hot water storage tank in an attic or furred space to sit in a pan of galvanized steel, plastic of a minimum thickness or another approved material.
