Peoria's water

Which side of Bell Road are you on?

Peoria does not send the same water to every address. According to the City's water FAQ, homes north of Bell Road receive groundwater and Colorado River water from the Central Arizona Project canal, treated at the Pyramid Peak Water Treatment Plant that Peoria owns jointly with Glendale. South of Bell Road, the supply is groundwater plus Salt and Verde River water treated at the Greenway plant. When summer demand peaks, a larger share of the water at every tap comes from wells.

The sources differ in hardness, and hardness shows up inside the house. Treated river water averages 13 to 17 grains per gallon, while the City's wells range from 2 to 8. Harder water leaves more scale in water heaters, on faucet aerators and in softener resin, so a softener setting or flushing schedule that works on one street may not fit another. When you call, tell us your neighborhood and what you are seeing, and we can factor the local supply into the visit.

Peoria homes

A housing stock built mostly after 1990

Census estimates put the median Peoria home at the year 2000. About half of the city's homes went up between 1990 and 2009, and roughly a quarter are older than that. Many still have their original fixtures and supply lines, so a leak, a slow drain or a struggling water heater often turns into a repair-or-replace conversation.

Larger projects also involve the City. Peoria's Development and Engineering Department says a homeowner replacing a water heater needs a permit, and that most projects start with a plan review. Trident is licensed by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors under ROC 331536, and our team explains the findings and the options before replacement or repiping work begins.

Ask our team
Where does Peoria's tap water come from?

It depends on where you live and the time of year. The City says homes north of Bell Road get groundwater plus Colorado River water treated at the Pyramid Peak plant, and homes south of Bell Road get groundwater plus Salt and Verde River water from the Greenway plant. More of the supply comes from wells in summer.

Is Peoria water hard?

Yes. Asked whether residents should change their softener settings, the City's water FAQ answers yes, listing averages of 13 grains per gallon for Greenway water and 17 for Pyramid Peak water, with wells ranging from 2 to 8.

Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Peoria?

Yes. The City states that a homeowner replacing a water heater needs a permit through its Development and Engineering Department. Plan for it when you schedule the replacement.

Who fixes a sewer backup in Peoria?

It depends on where the blockage is. If City crews find the problem in the main sewer line, the City makes the repair. If it is in the lateral between the house and the main, the City advises calling a plumber, because the property owner owns and maintains that line.

Does Peoria offer a rebate on new toilets?

The City offers a rebate to its residential water utility customers who install a WaterSense high-efficiency toilet, up to three per household. Check the City's rebate page for current terms before you buy.
