Different concerns, different systems

Water filtration options for your Phoenix home

A taste concern at the kitchen tap and scale on a fixture are different reasons to explore water treatment. Trident Plumbing & Drain helps Phoenix homeowners compare carbon filtration, reverse osmosis and water softeners without assuming one system does every job.

Our North Phoenix office serves Phoenix homeowners. Tell us what you have noticed, whether it affects one fixture or several and what treatment equipment is already installed. Useful recommendations start with the water concern and the system requirements, not a blanket claim that every home needs additional filtration.

Start with an assessment

Name the change you want to make

Taste, odor, cloudiness, visible particles and deposits are worth describing separately. Let us know when the change began and where it appears. These observations can guide the conversation, but appearance and taste alone do not establish which substances are present or whether the water is unsafe.

If you have water-test results or information from your supplier, bring them to the discussion. Identifying the concern helps you compare the stated capabilities of a treatment system with an actual need. A filter should be selected for what it is designed to address, rather than for a promise to remove everything.

Compare the purpose

Carbon, reverse osmosis and softening

Carbon filtration can be considered for certain taste and odor concerns. A softener addresses hardness minerals such as calcium and magnesium. A point-of-use reverse osmosis system supplies treated water at a specific fixture, commonly the kitchen sink. These functions are related, but they are not interchangeable.

The selected model matters. Check its stated reductions and operating requirements against the concern you want addressed. We can discuss more than one treatment approach when different needs exist, without assuming that a drinking-water filter also solves whole-home scale or that softened water has been universally purified.

One tap or wider coverage?

Plan where the system will work

A system serving a single drinking-water tap has a different job from equipment treating water as it enters the home. Discuss which fixtures you want served and what plumbing or treatment equipment is already present. The location, access and selected equipment all belong in the installation assessment.

For reverse osmosis, ask about the model water use as well as its treatment claims. For any option, consider how routine service will be reached after installation. The decision should include what the equipment will treat, where it will operate and what care it will require.

Include the ongoing care

Keep the system information with the home

The fixtures at a finished kitchen sink.

A treatment decision continues after installation. Keep the model details and care instructions, and ask how replacement filters or other service should be handled. Use the equipment requirements to plan upkeep instead of relying only on whether the water still tastes the same.

If a problem returns or a new concern appears, describe that change when requesting service. It may warrant reviewing the equipment or the water concern rather than adding another system automatically. Trident can discuss whether the current system still matches your needs and what service information is needed to plan the next step.

Taste, odor and minerals in the City's own numbers

The City of Phoenix's 2025 water quality report gives a fuller picture than taste alone. Total dissolved solids ranged from 464 to 716 ppm against a non-enforceable EPA guideline of 500, sodium ran from 91 to 183 ppm and hardness from 10 to 17.6 grains per gallon. Arsenic was detected at up to 8.5 parts per billion, with a highest annual average of 7 against a federal limit of 10.

Taste also changes with the season. The report says algae in the canals during late summer and fall are a major source of a musty taste and odor, and the City uses activated carbon to absorb what lingers after treatment. The City notes that the chlorine it maintains in the water as a disinfectant can also affect taste and odor. Carbon filtration is the usual choice for those two, while dissolved minerals and hardness call for reverse osmosis or a softener, so match the system to what bothers you.

Pricing a water treatment system

Start with the problem you want solved; the price follows from the system that solves it.

Ask about our current offer, 20% off a new water softener or filtration system. If you choose reverse osmosis, the RO membership covers annual filter changes for five years; sanitizing is not included.

  • The concern you are treating: chlorine taste, dissolved minerals, hardness or a specific contaminant.
  • One drinking tap or the whole house.
  • The certified reductions of the model you choose.
  • Cartridge and membrane replacement over time.
  • Plumbing, drain and space at the install location.

What the City's report lists for Phoenix water

Start with the City's 2025 water quality report. These three figures shape taste and the kind of filter worth considering.

Total dissolved solids in City samples, 2025
464–716 ppm

The EPA guideline is 500 ppm, and it is not enforceable. Dissolved minerals affect taste and leave spots on glass and fixtures.

Sodium range in City samples, 2025
91–183 ppm

Sodium is one of the dissolved minerals that shapes how tap water tastes, and a reason some homes add drinking water treatment.

Highest running annual chlorine average, 2025
0.84 ppm

The City disinfects with chlorine, and the report's highest running annual average was 0.84 ppm. Carbon filtration is the usual choice for chlorine taste.

Questions about
water filtration in Phoenix.

Questions about water filtration in Phoenix? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
Is a water softener the same as a filter?

No. A softener primarily addresses hardness minerals, while filtration systems have their own stated treatment capabilities. The concern you want to address determines which type, or combination, is appropriate.

Does reverse osmosis treat every tap in the home?

The point-of-use systems discussed here supply a particular fixture, commonly a kitchen drinking-water tap. Discuss the coverage you want before selecting equipment.

Can you tell what is in water from its taste?

Taste or appearance is useful information, but it cannot identify every substance. Water information or testing can help establish the concern, and the chosen system should have the relevant stated treatment capability.

Will one filter remove every contaminant?

Different filters have different treatment capabilities. Check the specific model and the reductions it is designed or certified to achieve, along with the required care and operating conditions.

Why does Phoenix tap water taste musty in the fall?

The City's 2025 report says algae that grow in the canals in late summer and fall are a major source of a musty taste and odor. The algae are removed in treatment, but the odor can linger.

Where can I see what is in my tap water?

The City posts its water quality report online each May. It lists the substances detected and the federal limit for each. Read it before choosing a system, then match the filter's certified reductions to what you want to change.
