Hardness first, then equipment

Water softener installation for Phoenix homes

A softener has one main job: reducing the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. Trident Plumbing & Drain installs water softeners for homes and businesses, starting with the hardness concern you want to solve rather than a standard package.

Our North Phoenix office arranges the visit. Tell us where you see buildup, how many people use water in the home and whether any treatment equipment is already installed. If you are still comparing softening with drinking-water filtration, start with our water filtration page.

On the job: water treatment equipment. Silent footage from Trident's project library.

Confirm the problem

Check that hardness is the concern

Hard water tends to show itself as scale on faucets, showerheads and other fixtures, soap residue, and soap or detergent that seems to work less well. Those signs point toward hardness minerals. Taste, odor or a specific contaminant is a different question that a softener is not designed to answer.

A hardness result for your own supply, from your water provider or a test at the home, tells you more than a general figure for the region. If the City of Phoenix supplies your water, its annual water quality reports include a section on hardness. Bring any results you have to the conversation.

Fit the household

Choose a system around how you use water

Selection starts with the household: how many people use water and where hardness is most noticeable, whether in bathrooms, the laundry area or around water-using appliances. A whole-home system is worth discussing when scale appears in several places rather than at one fixture.

Ask what the proposed unit needs to operate: its salt and maintenance requirements, the space it occupies and how it suits the plumbing already in place. A recommendation should explain why that unit fits your home instead of starting from a one-size-fits-all model.

Plan the installation

Prepare for the installation visit

The installation discussion covers where the equipment will sit, how it connects to the water supply and what the existing plumbing allows. If another treatment system is already installed, share its model so the new softener and the existing equipment can be considered together.

Replacing a softener that no longer performs as expected? Include its model, its service history and what changed, such as scale returning on fixtures. That history helps separate a unit that needs service from one that should be replaced. For a larger project, ask about financing options.

After installation

Keep salt and service on a schedule

Every salt-based softener has salt and service requirements set by its model. Ask how to keep an eye on the system and what routine maintenance it needs, so those tasks are planned from the day it is installed.

Trident offers a Salt Service membership that adds salt to your system on a regular schedule. If drinking-water taste becomes a concern later, reverse osmosis can be considered alongside softening, because the two systems serve different purposes.

Dial it in

Setting a softener when hardness spans a range

The City of Phoenix reports hardness as a range, not a single number. Samples from its distribution system in 2025 ran from 172 to 302 parts per million, which the report lists as 10 to 17.6 grains per gallon. The City treats Colorado River water at two plants and Salt and Verde River water at three, and its report does not give a hardness figure for each plant, so that range is the published starting point.

Because the range is wide, a hardness test at your own tap is worth having before the softener is programmed. Size the unit for your household's water use and set it for the higher readings you see. After that, keep it serviced: the City lists a water softener in need of maintenance among the causes of reduced water pressure in a home, and a unit that runs out of salt stops softening altogether.

What it costs

What changes the price of a softener install

Two softener quotes can differ for good reasons. Check that they cover the same points.

Ask about our current offer: 20% off a new water softener or filtration system. One per household. Offers can't be combined; some restrictions apply. Salt service members get salt added every 6 to 8 weeks.

  • Grain capacity for your household and the hardness measured at your tap.
  • An existing softener loop, or new plumbing to create one.
  • A drain and an outlet near the install spot.
  • Adding drinking water treatment such as reverse osmosis.
  • Removing and hauling away an old unit.

water softener installation in Phoenix.

Ask our team
Do I need a water test before installation?

No, but it helps. Describe what you are noticing and share any water-quality information you already have. A result for your own supply gives the recommendation a firmer basis than visible scale alone.

Can you replace a softener that is not working well?

Yes. Tell us the model, its service history and what has changed. The assessment considers whether the unit needs service or whether a replacement installation makes more sense.

Will a softener lower energy use or extend appliance life?

Reducing hardness can limit scale in water heaters and appliances, but softening is not a promise of a particular appliance lifespan or energy saving. The benefits follow from reducing hardness minerals.

Is the Salt Service membership right for my softener?

It depends on the system. The one-year plan includes regular visits to add salt. Ask our team whether it fits the unit installed in your home.

Does the City of Phoenix publish hardness by neighborhood?

Its annual report does not. The 2025 edition gives one range for the system, 10 to 17.6 grains per gallon, across water from five treatment plants. A test at your tap shows where your home falls in that range.

Does the City say I need a softener?

The City's water FAQ treats home filters and softeners as a personal choice and asks anyone who uses one to follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions. What a softener changes is scale: it reduces the calcium and magnesium that the City says make its water hard.
