Water Softener Installation in Mesa, AZ

A softener installation is easier to plan when the hardness information, the way the property uses water and the existing plumbing are clear from the start. Trident plans Mesa installations around those details.

Water softener installation for homes and businesses

Trident Plumbing & Drain installs water softeners to address the scale and soap residue that come with hard water. Before recommending equipment, we look at the concerns you have noticed, the water information available and the plumbing the system will connect to.

Our North Phoenix office arranges this service. Whether you are adding a first softener, replacing one that no longer performs or treating water at a business, the details below help define the installation.

Know your water

Use Mesa's hard water information

If the City of Mesa supplies your water, its Common Water Quality Concerns page includes a hard water section. It explains that calcium and magnesium cause hardness and that the level depends on the water source serving your area.

That general information is a starting point, not a measurement for your address. Pair it with what you see at home, such as chalky film on faucets or shower doors, and with any hardness test results you already have.

Define the job

What shapes the installation work

Household or building water use, any treatment equipment already in place and the existing plumbing setup all affect the proposed system. Tell us how many people use the water and where hardness is most noticeable so the equipment suits the property.

Ask where the softener would be installed and how you will reach it for salt and routine service. The selected unit's salt and maintenance requirements belong in the installation discussion, not after it.

Existing equipment

Replacing a softener that no longer performs

If scale or soap residue has returned, the current softener may need service or replacement. Share its model, its service history and when you noticed the change, so the recommendation starts from what is actually installed.

A replacement is also a chance to revisit fit. If household use has changed or other treatment has been added since the old unit went in, mention it. The new system should be chosen for the property as it is now.

Commercial properties

Trident serves businesses and managed buildings as well as homes. Describe where hardness causes problems on site, which water-using equipment is involved and how the property uses water during normal operation.

Name the person who can provide access and review the proposed work. If the building already has treatment equipment, include what it was installed to do, so the softener is planned alongside it rather than around it.

Set by zone

Setting a softener for Mesa's water zones

The City's 2025 water quality report gives two averages: about 12 grains per gallon in the City Zone, which draws on the Salt and Verde rivers, and 16 in the Eastern and Southern Zones, which draw on the Colorado River. Its advice is to set a softener at 16 and then adjust it to suit your needs. Expect some swing. The City's broader range runs from 12 to 22 grains depending on the source, and 2025 samples ran from 0.4 to 25 because the share of well water and its minerals vary.

Plan the plumbing around two more City notes. Softening adds sodium, about 8 mg/L for each grain removed, on top of the 45 to 212 mg/L the City measured in its 2025 samples, and it suggests people on sodium-restricted diets talk with their physician. Softened water can also harm plants, so the City says drip irrigation and landscape watering should connect upstream of the softener.

Softener quotes

What shapes a softener installation quote

A softener quote depends on the system and the plumbing it connects to. These factors explain most differences.

Ask about the current offer: 20% off a new water softener or filtration system. One per household. Offers can't be combined; some restrictions apply. After installation, a salt service membership adds salt every 6 to 8 weeks for a year.

  • System capacity for your household's use and your zone's hardness.
  • An existing softener loop, or new plumbing to create one.
  • Keeping irrigation lines upstream of the softener.
  • Drain and power at the install location.
  • Adding a drinking water system or removing an old unit.

Mesa hardness

The City's numbers for sizing a softener

The City publishes hardness by zone and explains what softening adds. Start there before choosing a system.

Average hardness in the City Zone
12 gpg

City Zone homes get Salt and Verde River water from the Val Vista plant, typically blended with City well water, at an average of about 12 grains per gallon.

Average hardness in the Eastern and Southern Zones
16 gpg

Homes in the Eastern and Southern Zones get Colorado River water and average 16 grains. The City suggests starting a softener at 16 and adjusting.

Sodium added per grain of hardness softened
8 mg/L

Softening swaps hardness minerals for sodium or, in some systems, potassium. At 12 grains, the City says sodium rises by about 96 mg/L.

water softener installation in Mesa.

Questions about water softener installation in Mesa? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
Is hardness the same across the city?

Not necessarily. The city's water quality information notes that hardness depends on the water source serving your area. Use information for your address or a measurement at the home when planning.

My softener seems to have stopped working. Does it need replacing?

Not always. Describe the change and share the model and service history. The unit's condition and the household's needs decide whether service or a replacement makes sense.

Do you install softeners for businesses?

Yes. Trident provides commercial plumbing service, including water treatment. Describe the property, its water use and any existing treatment equipment when you contact the office.

What should I ask about before the system is running?

Ask how to monitor the softener, what salt it uses and what maintenance the model needs. Knowing those tasks from the start keeps the system doing the job it was installed for.

Should my irrigation run through the softener?

No. The City of Mesa says the sodium in softened water can harm plant growth, so drip irrigation and landscape watering should be connected upstream of the softener.

How much sodium does a softener add?

The City estimates about 8 mg/L for every grain of hardness removed. Its example: water at 12 grains per gallon gains about 96 mg/L once softened. If you are on a sodium-restricted diet, the City suggests asking your physician.
