Service is arranged through our North Phoenix office. If your home is on the town’s water system, the Town of Cave Creek Utilities page lists an after-hours utility emergency contact and water quality reports for public-system concerns.

Where water comes from

Town water, Desert Hills water or a private well

The Town runs two water systems. Its main system draws Colorado River water out of the Central Arizona Project canal at Deer Valley Road in Phoenix and pumps it about 12 miles to the Town's treatment plant on Basin Road. The Town also owns the Desert Hills Water System, which serves parts of unincorporated Maricopa County from three wells, topped up with the Town's treated canal water through an interconnect.

Not every home in the area is on either one. The Town notes that many residents operate private wells, and that the 85331 ZIP code also takes in parts of Carefree, Phoenix, Scottsdale and unincorporated county land. Check the name on your water bill, or ask the Town's Utilities Department which system serves your address. If you are on a well, plan your own water test before choosing treatment equipment.

Pressure and age

The valve at the meter and the age of the house

The Town's utility master plan describes a water system that spans about 1,750 to 2,500 feet of elevation and 16 pressure zones. Town Code requires a pressure reducing valve, or PRV, on the customer side within three feet of the meter. According to the Town, most customers set it at about 50 to 80 psi, and the valve's installation, upkeep and replacement belong to the customer.

The Town recommends a yearly PRV inspection, ideally by a licensed plumber, and says rebuilds or replacements typically come every 5 to 10 years. Census estimates put the median home in town at 1998, with about 28% built before 1990, so ask when your valve was last serviced. Banging in the walls, bursts of high pressure at a faucet and water leaving the water heater's relief valve are signs the Town lists for a failing PRV.

Sewer or septic

Town sewer, septic tanks and what goes down the drain

The Town's sewer is limited. Its master plan says the wastewater system covers about 2 square miles, and the Town's wastewater page says not all areas can be served. As of July 2024 the Town counted 947 sewer customers, 436 of them residential. The master plan, adopted by the Town Council in November 2024, named three neighborhoods then on septic systems, and the Town refers septic permits to the Maricopa County Department of Environmental Services.

Either way, what goes into the drain matters. The Town asks sewer customers to put wipes, including flushable ones, paper towels, hair and kitty litter in the trash. For septic owners, the County advises pumping the tank every three to five years and cleaning the tank's effluent filter every six to twelve months. When you call about a slow drain, tell us whether the house is on sewer or septic.

Homes on Town water get river water by way of the CAP canal, pumped about 12 miles to the Town's treatment plant. The Town uses no wells for that supply.

Private wells

If your home runs on its own well, the Town's annual water report does not describe your water, so a water test is the place to start.

Questions about
plumbing.

Questions about plumbing services in Cave Creek? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
What plumbing services can Trident help with?

Drain cleaning, leak detection, slab leaks, toilet and disposal repairs, water heaters, water filtration, repiping and more.

Do you handle commercial plumbing as well?

Yes. Alongside residential service, Trident provides commercial plumbing. Describe the property and the problem when arranging service.

Which water treatment systems can you install?

Reverse osmosis systems, whole-house water softeners and activated carbon filtration systems. The right option depends on what you notice in your water.

Who should I contact about a town water or sewer problem?

Use the town’s utility contacts for the public system, and contact Trident about leaks, clogs and equipment in your home’s plumbing.

Where does Cave Creek's tap water come from?

Homes on the Town's main system use Colorado River water, delivered through the Central Arizona Project canal and treated at the Town's plant. The Town uses no wells for that supply, though it notes many residents run private wells of their own.

Is a pressure reducing valve required on Town water?

Yes. The Town's PRV guide cites Town Code 52.210(D), which requires a PRV on the customer side within three feet of the meter. The customer installs, maintains and replaces it, and the Town recommends an annual inspection.

Does an 85331 address mean my home is in the Town?

Not necessarily. The Town notes that 85331 addresses can sit in Cave Creek, Carefree, Phoenix, Scottsdale or unincorporated Maricopa County. Which one you are in decides which office handles your permits.

Has the Town found lead service lines?

Its 2025 water quality report says the service line inventory has not found lead service lines in its water systems to date. The report adds that the Town cannot control the materials used in the plumbing inside your home.
