Drinking water at one tap

Reverse osmosis installation for your kitchen

Reverse osmosis is a drinking-water system, not whole-home treatment. Trident Plumbing & Drain installs point-of-use RO systems that supply treated water to a dedicated fixture, commonly at the kitchen sink, and can stand in for bottled or delivered water.

Our North Phoenix office arranges RO consultations and installations. Tell us what you want to improve about your drinking water, any test information you have and what treatment equipment is already in place. For a side-by-side look at carbon, RO and softening, see our water filtration page.

The process

What happens inside an RO system

Pressure pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane. Treated water goes to the drinking-water faucet, while a separate reject-water stream carries away what the membrane holds back. The complete system, including its filters, determines what it is designed to reduce.

That is why model specifications matter. When a particular substance is your concern, check the tested or certified performance of the system being proposed rather than assuming every RO unit gives the same result. Better taste and a specific reduction are separate claims to compare.

Plan the faucet, space and connections

Installation planning covers where the unit will be located, where the dedicated faucet will go and how the system connects to the existing plumbing at the sink. Mention any other equipment already sharing that space so the layout can be worked out before installation day.

Think about how much water your household drinks and cooks with through the day. Those routines help you weigh the practical requirements of each model, along with the water it uses and the space it needs.

Alongside other treatment

Using RO in a home with a softener

A whole-home softener reduces hardness minerals throughout the house; an RO system treats only the water reaching its own faucet. Because they do different jobs, the two can be planned together. If you already have a softener, share its model and condition so the RO installation fits the wider setup.

If scale on fixtures is your main frustration, start with that concern rather than a drinking-water filter, because RO will not address hardness elsewhere in the home. Our softener installation page covers that decision in more detail.

Living with the system

Filter changes, membranes and water use

An RO system needs regular care even though it runs through a simple faucet. Follow the manufacturer's schedule for filter and membrane replacement and keep the model details with your home records. Trident's RO Filter Changes membership includes annual filter changes; system sanitizing is not included.

Because RO produces a reject-water stream, water use belongs in the comparison. Some point-of-use models are evaluated under EPA's WaterSense program for efficiency and performance; check the specific unit rather than assuming every RO system qualifies, and ask for each model's specifications before you choose.

Why people add RO

Dissolved minerals and what the report advises

If drinking water taste is your concern, the City of Phoenix's 2025 water quality report helps explain it. The report lists total dissolved solids of 464 to 716 ppm, against a 500 ppm guideline the EPA recommends but does not enforce, and sodium of 91 to 183 ppm. Those are dissolved minerals, which carbon filtration is not designed to remove. A membrane system reduces them at the one faucet it serves.

The report also lists arsenic, with a highest annual average of 7 parts per billion against a federal limit of 10. For lead from household plumbing, it says a filter certified to reduce lead by an American National Standards Institute accredited certifier is effective in reducing lead exposure. Whatever your reason, check the model's certified reductions and keep to its maintenance schedule; the report warns that not following the manufacturer's instructions can result in potentially unsafe water.

RO pricing

What an RO installation costs depends on

An RO quote depends on the system and the space under the sink. These are the factors to compare.

The reverse osmosis membership covers annual filter changes for five years; system sanitizing is not included. Ask about the current water treatment offer as well.

  • The membrane and filter stages, and their certified reductions.
  • A storage tank or tankless RO design, and the space under the sink.
  • A dedicated faucet, a refrigerator line or both.
  • The drain connection and the model's reject water.
  • Filter and membrane replacement over the years.

reverse osmosis systems in Phoenix.

Questions about reverse osmosis systems in Phoenix? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
Does an RO system use extra water?

Yes. Reverse osmosis sends part of the water to a reject stream as it treats the rest. The amount depends on the model, so compare water use alongside treatment performance.

Where is the RO faucet installed?

A point-of-use system commonly supplies a dedicated faucet at the kitchen sink. The exact location and connections are reviewed during the installation discussion.

Can RO replace bottled or delivered water?

A dedicated drinking-water faucet can be a convenient alternative to bringing water in. Whether it suits you depends on your water concern and the model chosen.

Can RO be added if I already have a softener?

Yes. The softener handles hardness throughout the home and RO treats water at its own faucet. Share the softener's model and condition so both systems can be planned together.

What does the City report for arsenic in Phoenix water?

The City's 2025 water quality report lists arsenic from not detected up to 8.5 parts per billion, with a highest annual average of 7. The federal limit is 10, measured as a running annual average. To reduce it further at your drinking tap, choose a system certified for arsenic reduction.

Will RO help with lead from old plumbing?

The City's report says a filter certified to reduce lead by an American National Standards Institute accredited certifier is effective in reducing lead exposure. Check that the RO model you choose carries that certification.
