Hot water the way you need it

Water heater installation in Sun City, AZ

A sudden lack of hot water can bring the routine to a halt, from the morning shower to kitchen cleanup. Trident Plumbing & Drain installs and replaces gas and electric water heaters, with options that fit your home's energy source and hot-water demand.

Installation is only part of the work. We also repair and maintain existing units, so if your current heater may be repairable, that can be part of the conversation. Arrange a visit through our Peoria office and share the current unit's details.

Comparing water heater types

Traditional tank heaters store a supply of hot water. Tankless models heat water on demand instead of keeping a full tank hot and take up less space. Hybrid heaters use heat pump technology with a storage tank, and Marathon models are electric storage heaters with a non-metallic tank.

Fuel type matters as well. Gas and electric systems connect differently, and switching from one to the other can involve more than the heater itself. Trident explains how each option would fit your existing connections and the space available.

Right-size the unit

Matching capacity to your household

Household size, hot-water habits and energy goals all shape the choice. A system that is too small struggles to keep up and leads to cold showers, while an oversized unit heats more water than you will use.

Think about the times of day when several fixtures run hot water at once and whether that pattern is likely to change. Those details help the technician recommend a tank capacity, or a tankless unit, that suits the home.

What a replacement involves

A replacement means disconnecting the old unit and connecting the new one to the water supply and to its gas or electrical service. Ask what the installation includes so you know what will be done at the connections and around the unit.

Mention the location of the heater, how easy it is to reach and anything at the existing connections that has given trouble. If the old heater failed by leaking, point out any water damage nearby so it can be noted before work begins.

A small investment

Maintenance that protects the new unit

Proactive maintenance can help a heater last longer and run more efficiently. Ignoring signs such as strange noises or lukewarm water can lead to a sudden breakdown, and a neglected tank is more prone to leaks and corrosion.

Ask what maintenance the manufacturer recommends for the new unit and how often. Trident provides water heater maintenance, and financing can help when a replacement is the right step.

County rules

Replacing a heater where the County sets the rules

Because Sun City has no city government, water heater work falls under Maricopa County. The County's Construction Permit Information page states that permits are no longer required to replace an existing water heater, provided the work is done in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. If you would like the County to inspect the installation, you may still apply for a permit. In practice, the manufacturer's installation instructions become the standard the job is held to.

Those instructions cover the venting, the gas or electrical connection, clearances and the relief valve, so keep the manual with the heater. Switching from a tank to tankless, changing fuel or moving the heater is more than a straight swap, so ask the County whether that change needs a permit before work starts. The County also reminds owners to review their HOA's CC&Rs before modifications, which matters if the heater or its vent will move.

Pricing a new heater

What moves the price of a new water heater

Every installation quote rests on the heater you pick and the work needed to connect it. These are the items that change it most.

GreenSky® financing is available for a new heater. Preventative maintenance members get one water heater flush a year, which helps keep ahead of the scale this water leaves.

  • Storage tank, tankless, hybrid or Marathon, and gas or electric.
  • Capacity or flow rate matched to the people and fixtures in the home.
  • Changes to the venting, the gas line or the electrical circuit.
  • Service valves that make later flushing or descaling easier.
  • Hauling away the old unit, and a County inspection permit if you want one.

Before a new heater

Local facts for a water heater replacement

A new heater has to suit the County's rules, the local water and the size of your household.

County permit to replace an existing water heater
Not required

The County's permit page says replacing an existing heater needs no permit when the work follows the manufacturer's specifications. An optional permit gets you a County inspection.

Hardness range in EPCOR's 2025 report
7–11 gr/gal

Water at this hardness drops sediment to the bottom of a tank and builds scale inside tankless units, so plan for flushing or descaling from the first year.

Our 12 year old water heater was leaking. I called and spoke with Shelby who was able to dispatch a technician immediately, same day… Tyler arrived on time, worked efficiently and cleaned up after himself.

water heater installation in Sun City.

Questions about water heater installation in Sun City? Start here, or tell us what is happening at your home.

Ask our team
Should I choose a tank or tankless water heater?

It depends on your hot-water use, the space available and the fuel type. Tankless units heat on demand; tank units store hot water. Trident explains how each fits your home.

Do you install both gas and electric water heaters?

Yes. Trident installs and services gas and electric units, as well as hybrid and Marathon models.

What happens if the heater is too small?

An undersized unit struggles to keep up with demand and can leave you with lukewarm or cold water. Sizing to your household's use avoids that.

Can my current heater be repaired instead?

Possibly. Trident also repairs water heaters, and the fault and the condition of the unit determine whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Will the County inspect my new water heater?

If it replaces an existing heater, only if you ask. Maricopa County's permit page says a permit is no longer required to replace an existing water heater when the work follows the manufacturer's specifications, but owners who want a County inspection may apply for a permit.

Does a tankless heater work with hard well water?

It can, with a plan for scale. EPCOR's 2025 report lists hardness of 7 to 11 grains per gallon. Minerals at that level build up on a tankless heat exchanger over time. Ask for service valves so the unit can be descaled, or consider a softener ahead of it.
